Since launching in Rotterdam in 2021, we have connected over 475 young people with a migration background to an experienced mentor. More than 155 volunteers from Rotterdam and the surrounding area have dedicated themselves to passing on their knowledge and experience to the next generation. The result? 7 out of 10 Rotterdam youths found a job, internship, or study program thanks to a DUO trajectory.
The magic of duos
Together with its partners, DUO Rotterdam is making the city a little more inclusive, one step at a time. And the past 5 years haven't always been smooth sailing. Marije Pronk, Regional Director of DUO for a JOB: "Sometimes we faced headwinds, such as a shortage of mentors or funding, but thanks to the endless dedication of our active mentors and the enthusiasm of our mentees, we were always able to keep making matches and finding suitable jobs. The magic of our duos always remained intact!"
Community
Together with many other initiatives in Rotterdam, we focus on connecting people and bringing them together in a community. And during the DUO Festival, that community was more visible than ever, says Marije Pronk: "Over the past 5 years, a wonderful DUO community has emerged in Rotterdam. A diverse collection of mentors, mentees, and partners who all came together from their own backgrounds, ages, and life paths to celebrate life (and DUO Rotterdam)."
A duo from the very beginning: Henk & Awab
One duo that has been involved with DUO for a JOB for all 5 years is Henk & Awab. With the support of his mentor—and now friend—Henk, Awab started a bachelor's degree in International Social Work. Nearly 5 years later, the two still see each other regularly. Thanks to Henk, Awab is getting to know the city at a rapid pace. "Because of Henk, I have come to love Rotterdam. I belong to this city now."
Looking ahead
In another 5 years, we hope that DUO for a JOB is not only a household name in Rotterdam and Utrecht, but that we will be able to connect many more duos throughout the Netherlands. We are working hard to ensure we are ready for this and that we can scale up in a sustainable way.
