After graduating, he moved to the Netherlands, where his mother and brother were already living. He had one clear wish: to become an interior architect. But finding a job proved more difficult than expected, so Mohammad approached DUO for a JOB. We matched him with 67-year-old Gerard, who had started working at the municipal engineering firm immediately after studying civil engineering. Together, they developed a plan. They improved his CV and portfolio and prepared together for job interviews. Step by step, Mohammad's confidence grew: "I learned that I shouldn't wait; I need to take action myself, make calls, and follow through."
And then, just before the end of their program, the news he had hoped for arrived: he was hired by the municipal engineering firm!
It wasn't an easy path. "Sometimes it seemed impossible," Mohammad recounts. "But with my own effort and the support of my mentor, I took steps I never thought possible. Gerard offered advice and helped where needed, but it was my own perseverance that made the difference. Thanks to my mentor, I found direction, motivation, and ultimately, success."
Gerard also learned a lot from his time with Mohammad: "I realized that I can sometimes be impatient. I want to push forward where Mohammad is sometimes a bit more reserved. This created a beautiful balance."
